Branding a Software Designer: Fairport NY Branding Photography

One of the coolest things about being a branding photographer is getting to meet people from a variety of different industries. Like Marissa - a working nurse, who also designs VR software curriculum for future nurses. Talk about multi-talented!

It was so cool to learn about how the process from Marissa while we photographed her at The Hive, as well as some outdoor locations in Fairport. As you can see, taking her branding photographs was pretty easy with her award winning smile!

Retail Branding Portraits: Fairport NY Brand Photography

Aaron and Janetta came to us with the goal of changing the way the world looks at furniture sales. As the 3rd generation of owners of local furniture store, Ruby Gordon, they wanted to shake things up a little bit and stand apart from the big chain stores in the area.

Ruby Gordon has been family run and locally owned for nearly 85 years. They want people to know that they’re a family run, local business - a family run, local business with a goal of staying relevant.

They’ve started using their social feeds to show more of their down to earth personality, and are finding ways to connect to their followers that’s more than just “here’s a cool picture of a living room.”

So we visited on a day when we could capture behind the scenes of their latest commercial filming, and used the many spaces in the store to create great portraits for both Aaron and Janetta.

It wasn’t just the two of them we photographed. We also found ways to include their little ones in a real way, which truly showed them as a real, down to earth family, just doing what they do best. (We’ve kept them out of this set for privacy reasons, so you’ll just have to trust us on this part.)

As you can see, branding isn’t just for the small one person entrepreneur. It works for any size small business. I’m so glad we’ve had the opportunity to meet and work with this local family. If you’re in the market for furniture and want to work with good people in the process, we can’t say enough good things about the Ruby family.

Rooftop Portraits Rochester NY: Behind the Scenes

If you've worked with us recently, you may have noticed we often use flash, even when we are outside. This extra light is often times what makes all the difference in an image - taking it from good to great! If you haven't been on a session with us recently and have just looked through our portfolio, you may not realize that we even use flash. No, we're not trying to trick you - but we do want you to think it's a natural light image. Our use of flash is intended to enhance and work with the existing (sun) light - resulting in a natural looking image.

Here is an example:

Objective: Create a unique portrait of The Rochestariat co-founders, utilizing the city skyline.

Setting: Rooftop in downtown Rochester, about 7 pm in July. Sun setting behind camera, gorgeous blue sky behind subjects.

Problem: Exposing for the people results in a washed out sky. Exposing for the sky results in dark faced people. Dun dun dun...

natural light only

Solution: Use off camera flash to fill in faces, while keeping that brilliant blue sky dark.

with flash

Result: A properly balanced, natural looking image that rocks!

Special thank you to my lovely VAL/assistant Erin, and my set designer, God.

For our next trick, we'll show an exception to the rule, how we do fun things with the flash that may not look so natural... Stay tuned!
